«Vimos por este meio solicitar que à Região do Alto Douro Vinhateiro seja retirada de imediato a classificação de Património da Humanidade»

Carta enviada hoje por Correio para os responsáveis da UNESCO e do ICOMOS. Enviado também por mail para todos os membros das duas instituições. Enviado pelo Facebook para todos os apaixonados pelo Douro em Portugal e no Mundo*

Dear Sirs,

In 2001, UNESCO classified the Alto Douro Wine Region in northern Portugal, as a World Heritage Site.
In February 2011, the construction of a hydroelectric dam near the mouth of the River Tua, Dam Foz-Tua began, after the project was approved by the Government of Portugal. This dam will destroy all the Tua Valley and its railway and it will cause irreparable losses with regards to the natural, cultural and human heritage of that area and all the Alto Douro Wine Region, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.
In December 2011, the Government of Portugal, through the Secretary of State for Culture, announced that the construction of the dam wouldn’t be suspended.
Therefore, we hereby request that the classification of heritage site is removed immediately from the Alto Douro Wine Region, since such a classification is not compatible with a landscape marked by a pile of concrete that destroys one of the most important natural regions of Europe.
If it doesn’t happen, UNESCO itself is in question, since it accepts that a landscape is totally garbled after being classified as a World Heritage Site.

Yours Sincerely,

Attachements:

Before: Tua Valley and its Railway – video and photos
Now: Works at Tua Valley
