The SLM employs three criteria for classification. A preliminary step is to consider the IPA symbols used to represent the L1 and L2 sounds. This is followed by acoustic measurements and listeners’ perceptual judgments of sounds in L1 and L2. The SLM posits that interlingual identification occurs at a phonetic rather than a phonemic level, so the procedures operate on sounds (that is, phonetically-relevant phone classes).
