I follow Lakoff and Johnson’s definition of a conceptual metaphor as an underlying association that is systematic in both language and thought and explains something new or abstract in terms of something familiar or concrete. Although the focus of my analysis is on metaphor, I also relate to metonymies and similes, which function in similar ways (Lakoff & Johnson 1980 : 36).
